Bump Keys

Bump Keys are all over the press – and are a serious security risk. We work with both North Wales and Gwent police and have heard from reliable sources that break-ins are being recorded where bump keys are put down as the method of entry. At the moment, bumpkeying is not a widespread problem but it’s worth taking precautions and keeping one step ahead of the criminals.

If you do a quick google for bump keys you will be suprised at the amount of information available on these quick by-pass tools.

There are quite a few, low cost things you can do to protect your home from bump keys. The first thing, if you have a wooden door with a mortice lock, use it. These locks work on a different principle to the cylinder locks that are susceptible to Bumping.

Mortice Lock

If you have a upvc door with only a cylinder lock, then it doesn’t matter how many hooks, bolts or rollers are on your lock strip – the door is susceptible to bumping. One answer would be restricted keys. If the crooks can’t get hold of a blank key for your lock, then they cannot make a bump key. Unfortunatley restricted profile keys can be expensive.

As members of the Institute of Certified Locksmiths we are at the forefront of developments in locks and security. The ICL in partnership with a leading manufacturer can now supply a treatment for cylinder locks that prevents bump key attacks and makes picking more difficult too. We have tested this extensivley and it is very effective, so much so that several councils are now treating all the new locks that they install with this product.

At Delyn Locksmiths, we are now able to supply this product at a very competitive price of £5 per door. Call us on 07977 594707 for details.
